What's the best way to get to/from this trip?
The simplest way is to fly into Barcelona and out of Girona airport. Barcelona is also an option for the return, with good train connections from Girona.
But we'd also love you to consider travelling either one or both ways by train. It's a six-hour direct train ride across the French countryside between Paris and Girona, or just under six hours to Barcelona. The TGV trains are double-decker, so the views are great from your panoramic perch.
Whilst it can be done in a day in either direction, we find it nicer to stay a night or two in Paris if you can, and we work with a lovely hotel right by the Gare de Lyon station to make life easy.
We can also book the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris.
One thing you could think about is flying one way and doing the train in the other direction. It's always lovely setting off on a journey by train, but coming back by rail means you can stock up on wine and olive oil whilst you're in Catalonia without worrying about extortionate excess baggage fees!
If you'd like to know more or discuss ideas, just let me know.
When specific meals are not included, where do we eat?
Where meals are not included, your hotel will offer meals and/or there will be multiple options nearby - all of which we highlight in our travel guide app. Essentially, we won't ever let you go hungry.
In cities, we rarely include meals because of the wide variety of choices available - unless it's a meal we feel is unmissable.
Is this trip suitable for solo travellers?
Most of the costs are fixed so going solo will usually mean you pay nearly the same for one person as you would for two. If you enjoy time to yourself then the experience itself will be absolutely lovely, and safe.
What if I get lost or need some help?
On the independent parts of this trip, we are always on hand to help and advise should you need us and for emergencies, you have a 24-hour number to call. It should be said though that we provide easy-to-use navigational guidance for driving, meaning it should be very difficult for you to get into any bother!
I don’t speak Spanish – is that a problem?
No, though you'll find that Catalan is actually the lingua franca in these parts. In Barcelona, you'll be just fine. The only time you might struggle is if you go to a proper neighbourhood restaurant away from the tourist centre (there's a good one by Sants station). The language might be in Catalan only, though everyone speaks Spanish so if you've got some of that, this would be the time to use it.
In the countryside, in smaller restaurants and villages, English is rarely spoken. But most of the time you will be with your hosts, who will speak excellent English, and so aside from the occasional pointing and gesturing, again you'll have no problems. Part of the charm is going to places where English is not the dominant language in our experience.
Can I make changes to this trip?
We can tailor the trip in certain ways, making sure that we retain the essence of this holiday through the pacing and content. We're always happy to work within your timeframes, so if you have two weeks for your travels, we can discuss which parts to take out. Equally, if you have more time then there's always more to explore, be it Madrid or Andalucía.
Will I get to meet the locals?
That's very much the idea yes. Beyond the time you spend with your local hosts and guides, the spirit of this trip is very much one of discovery and so we assume you'll enjoy striking up conversations with the locals as you go. The places you visit offer a good balance between being well-established enough as tourism destinations to be able to communicate in English, and small/away from the crowds enough to necessitate a bit of 'Spanglish' to get by. It's all good fun and all very authentic in our experience.
How do I book?
Typically the sequence is as follows:
i) You give us the thumbs up once you are happy with your trip.
ii) We take a 20% deposit by bank transfer or visa/mastercard credit or debit card.
iii) We reconfirm all services for you.
iv) We provide your login for your "MyPura" account online, and this is where you'll find all of your 'paperwork', your itinerary details, ATOL certificates and so on.
Your balance is due eight weeks prior to travel. Two to three weeks prior to travel the final details of your trip will be uploaded to your personal travel app. This will include your flight tickets, contact numbers for every guide, local information and every detail you might need while away.
As you would expect, we are always available and remain in touch throughout the process to make sure that you have all you need to enjoy a fantastic trip.
