You may have never heard of the Penedés region that you are now staying in, but you will almost certainly have sampled its most famous export back home. That's because El Penedés produces around 90% of the country's Cava sparkling wine, a heartland of wineries old and new, large and small.
First, please forget any 'low-budget bubbly' notions you may have. As you'll discover, Cava production has a centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship. The wines you'll taste are crafted in the classic method, where ageing in cellars brings Champagne quality and releases its hallmark notes of citrus and orchard fruits.
You have a private driver with you this morning as you visit our favourite small-scale winery in the area, learning how premium organic Cava is made and feeling how deep the traditions run. The views, the people and the wines are very special and we know you'll love being looked after by Monica and her team.
You'll then be dropped off at a lovely restaurant near the hotel, where we suggest you eat your main meal for the day. They have their own orchard full of fresh produce that you can wander around before sitting down to eat.
You then walk 15 minutes through the vines back to your hotel. After some time to relax and revive yourself by the pool, round the day off in style with a stroll around your hotel's own vineyard and cellar before toasting with your hosts in the living room-style tasting room, full of artefacts from the family's winemaking past.
