Arriving at Terra Dominicata
You now move on to the Priorat wine region, more on which very soon. For now, if the sun is out you might start the day with a dip in your hotel's pool this morning.

Setting off from Tarragona, you'll soon be out of the car again to call in at a grand Roman aqueduct hidden in the hills. It really is a remarkable sight, made all the more so by the fact that you could have easily driven straight past it!

A lovely mid-morning or lunch stop is the town of Reús, famous in Catalonia for two things. Firstly, it's the birthplace of Antoni Guadí, who you are probably familiar with. Secondly, it's the heart of Catalonia's Vermouth production. And so little Reús gave the region two of its most celebrated icons; Modernist architecture and the culture of vermut, as it's known here.

Although Gaudí didn't leave any famous buildings in his hometown, many notable disciples have adorned the town with a grand collection of Modernist jewels.

Heading up into the Priorat hills, you'll enter a world set apart from the rest of Catalonia. This area is more mountainous than El Penedés and has a more remote feel. Of all the hilltop stone towns and villages which dot the region, the most spectacular is Siurana. Stop here for lunch or a coffee with a view before a grand arrival at the Terra Dominicata winery hotel, your haven of peace in the hills.

Terra Dominicata

In the Priorat area, our favourite hotel is Terra Dominicata. The adult-only boutique hotel sits in quiet countryside amid the hotel's vineyards, with views to the mountain ridges of the Montsant Natural Park (particularly beautiful at sunrise). We love this hotel for many reasons, be it the beauty of the surroundings, the character and quality of the decor or the absolute sense of peace which pervades every corner.

Perhaps best of all are the staff, who make you feel at home from the minute you arrive. What's particularly striking is how much the restaurant staff know and love their wine, not surprising given that the hotel produces its own top-notch wine (and olive oil) on site.

As well as being an idyllic base to explore the Priorat area, it's also somewhere to unwind in simpler ways. You might take a gourmet picnic into the vines, stroll along the hilltops to a historic monastery ruin or, if you want a bit of indulgence, treat yourself to a sauna in the cabin made out of the winery's own barrels. The hotel is also proudly TV-free, making up for it with a quite epic collection of books to thumb through.
